WELCOME TO SAVING ONE MILLION LIVES

On Tuesday, 16th October, His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria formally launched Nigeria's Saving One Million Lives (SOML) Initiative in his role as Co-Chair of the United Nations Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children.

Consistent with the Transformation Agenda of Mr. President and the National Strategic Health Development Plan (NSHDP), Nigeria's SOML Initiative is a results-based, sector wide approach to improving our health outcomes and reflects a paradigm shift from focusing on inputs and processes to measuring successful health outcomes in terms of 'lives saved'.

The Initiative builds on existing policies, strategic documents and frameworks - a drive to focus on improving health outcomes through strengthening the execution, performance management and delivery of Nigeria's existing basic health services by setting clear, ambitious targets for real impact.

Adopting a public - private coalition approach, our goal is to save the lives of one million women and children by 2015.
